“The voyage of discovery is not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.”

-Blaise Pascal

Love painting? Love the outdoors? How about painting outdoors?

Every Sunday from 10:30 am – 12:30 pm, starting 21 September, join me for a relaxed morning of plein air painting at Sanctuary Lakes. We gather at the main beach in front of Sanctuary Lakes Boulevard before heading out, together we decide where the day’s inspiration will lead us.

This is a free event and always will be. Free to join. Free to choose your medium—watercolour, acrylic, oils, ink, pastels, charcoal, or whatever speaks to you. Free to pick your subject and free to enjoy the company of other artistically inclined humans of Sanctuary Lakes. Come when you can, skip when you must—no pressure, just art and connection.

📍 Meeting Point: Main Beach, Sanctuary Lakes Boulevard
🕥 When: Sundays, 10:30 am – 12:30 pm

We often dream of traveling to distant places to find inspiration, yet beauty is waiting for us right outside our door. As Blaise Pascal once observed, “The voyage of discovery is not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.” Drawing or painting our surroundings forces us to slow down and look again, not with the dull familiarity of daily habit, but with the freshness of someone seeing it for the first time.

The magic of travel isn’t just in faraway destinations; it’s in the way travel trains us to notice details that we might ignore at home. Art is a way to bring that same attentiveness to our own streets, lakes, gardens and skies. When we sketch the curve of a tree or the shadow across a familiar path, we rescue our own neighborhood from invisibility and allow it to shimmer again with meaning.

Our group shall gather with this spirit, not to chase glory or the exotic, but to learn how to see the ordinary as extraordinary. Together, we turn Sanctuary Lakes into a studio and in the process each week, find that the place we live in is as worthy of appreciation EVERY DAY as exotic destinations we may fly to, a few times a year.

    • Beachfronts

    • Spots along Skeleton Creek

    • Parks of Sanctuary Lakes

    • And yes… the golf course, of course!

    • Bring your own gear: paints, easel, sketchbook, whatever you need.

    • No classes, no formal instruction: just encouragement, inspiration and the joy of painting outdoors.

    • Show & Tell: At the end of each session, those who wish can share their work in a casual circle. Stay for a chat and make new friends

    • Weather permitting: If the skies open up, we’ll postpone until the next week.

    • Health first: If you’re unwell, or recovering from COVID-19, please wait until a week after recovery before joining us again.

  • Because art belongs here. Because painting outdoors is a joy best shared with others. Because the west needs more of this. Because it is about time.
