Workshops

Skill, Insight & Context

All workshops follow a structured, immersive format.

Workshops go beyond technique. Each one weaves together three strands of learning:

  • TECHNIQUE + CRAFT – practical watercolor skills and methods needed to be a confident watercolorist

  • THEORY + INSIGHT – how and why these methods work together

  • ART HISTORICAL CONTEXT – the artists, movements and ideas that shaped the visual language of landscape painting that still influence us today

In every workshop, you’ll not only attempt a few paintings, but you’ll also understand why it works, where it comes from and how it connects to the larger story of art.

Workshops combine demonstration, guided practice and discussion, so you walk away with new skills and a renewed sense of art appreciation and artistic purpose.

Upcoming Workshops 2026

Let’s be honest. Watercolour has become too timid.

But watercolour itself was never meant to be timid. It is an inherently dynamic medium. It wants to move, bleed, merge and glow. Watercolour is capable of astonishing vibrancy and luminosity when we allow it to be itself.

For decades we have repeated the language and style of masters so faithfully that their way of painting has come to dominate the medium. While their achievements remain extraordinary, imitation has slowly replaced exploration. Yet we are no closer to eliminating muddy and washed-out colours in our paintings.

These workshops are not about perfect imitation or realism for its own sake. They are about rediscovering the untamed energy and luminosity of watercolour and learning to paint with courage again.

Reflections from recent events

  • " A very big Thank You for today’s wonderful workshop with the Northern Beaches Art Society. I was blown away by the wonderful light, translucency and vibrancy of your work. "

    - Heather, Sydney | Mar 2026

  • " I do value your open hearted and honest approach to watercolors and your own learnings in the journey of art. Hearing how you process what went wrong is useful too. I like watching how someone uses their hand techniques in applying color. The fact that you are a humble learner and teacher, makes the classes approachable. Keep up the good work and your cheery manner! "

    - Laureen, Melbourne | Jan 2026

  • " The things that stood out for me were how you described what happens to the wash when you go back after the first wash, before it’s fully dry - that the particles of pigment and the binder gum arabic get disturbed leading to a less pleasing, smooth wash. And also your tips on how to avoid the dreaded cauliflower :) "

    - Bronwen, Melbourne | Jan 2026

  • " Thank you so much for the inspiring workshop at our Sunbury art room last weekend. I got a lot of ideas from it, especially about color mixing. Hope you can come to Sunbury again one day to run another workshop. "

    - Elizabeth, Melbourne | Feb 2026

  • " I just wanted to say a big thank you for an amazing Bold and Glow Workshop over this last weekend here in Auckland. It was fun and challenging and even though I was right out of my comfort zone with your fast and loose style of painting, it was very enjoyable. I especially loved painting the Fiordland scene, and my aim is to paint it over and over so as to perfect what I learnt. "

    - Ros Gallagher, Auckland | Mar 2026
