Painting My Passport
An Artist’s Pilgrimage Around Australia in 40 Days & 40 Nights
Few years ago, I became an Australian citizen. A passport usually gets you dreaming about all the places you can go outside your country. But when I looked through mine, I realised there were 17 Australian landmarks printed inside it and I hadn't seen many of them even though I have been living in Australia for over two decades.
So in Aug 2027, I'm setting off on a painting pilgrimage around Australia, visiting and painting on location, every one of those landmarks.
Painting My Passport is a 40-day, 40-night artistic pilgrimage around Australia. Beginning and ending in Melbourne, I will travel to all 17 landscapes, painting each one from life and documenting the journey through writing, photography and film. Before I use my passport to travel further into the world, I want to use it to travel inward.
Some are places I know. Others I have never seen. The project is about both discovery and return - How travelling through a country changes the way we see it and how the places we experience eventually become the places we remember ourselves by. Mostly though, this is my way of saying thank you to the country I choose to call home before my passport takes me elsewhere again.
